CROSSROADS TO DISCUSS CULTURE ON FIRST WEDNESDAYS – What is culture? Crossroads Community Center seeks to find the answer to that question and to start an open dialogue with UA students through its new program “Wednesday’s at Crossroads.” The program, which debuts on Wednesday, Sept. 3, is designed to help students make new friends and exchange ideas in a culturally rich environment. ZEN BUDDHIST PRIEST, POET TO VISIT CAMPUS – Norman Fischer, a poet and Zen Buddhist priest, will be on campus Sept. 9-10. Fischer’s itinerary includes a talk, discussion and book signing, Sept. 9, 4 p.m., 205 Gorgas Library; a meditation session Sept. 10, 9 a.m., Riverside community (RSVP required); and a community conversation, 3:30 p.m., Crossroads Community Center Lounge, Ferguson. You may now drop all but your last course online via myBama through Oct. 29. By dropping through myBama, you assume all responsibility for this action and cannot be re-added to the course. If you drop a class after Aug. 28 you will receive a “W” for the class.

Attention ALL NEW FRESHMEN: the Office of Academic Affairs has a welcoming gift for the Class of 2012. For those who did not attend last week’s Convocation, please stop by the office of the university registrar in 206C Student Services Center to pick up your gift.

UA Safer Living Guide is available online. To help make the campus community a safe and secure place in which to live, work, and learn, the UA Police Department asks that you review the UA Safer Living Guide and take an active role in protecting yourself from crime while living on campus.

Marr’s Field Journal, UA’s undergraduate literary and arts magazine, will have its first meeting Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. in 360 Ferguson Center. All students interested in becoming staff members are encouraged to attend. In addition, Marr’s Field Journal is accepting submissions for this year’s issue. The Graduate Student Association is hosting its first Non-Traditional Student Fair on Sept. 16 from 6-8 p.m. on the second floor of Ferguson Center. If you are a returning student who is married or has children, this fair will have resources for you. More information: Sy Pryor at 348-8562.

SGA Homecoming 2008: “A Tide Nation: Unified with Crimson Pride.” The SGA Homecoming committee has released its new rules and regulations book to begin the sign up process for all Homecoming activities. Survey of student financial management practices. Researchers at UA, along with several other state universities are interested in learning more about how students manage their personal finances. If you are interested in learning more about this project or providing information, please click here.

The new online “My Football Ticket” tab will be available from the Action Card Web site. This site allows students with tickets who do not plan to attend a game to either give their ticket to a specific student or give it to the ticket pool. Students who either attend all of the games and/or give their tickets to another student will be eligible for prize drawings. All incoming freshmen and students living on campus (dorms, fraternities, sororities, and any other campus housing) are required to have received a meningococcal vaccine. All other students on campus also are encouraged to have this vaccination. Manactra (the recommended vaccine) is available at the Student Health Center. Most insurance companies pay for this vaccine, but you should check with your insurance representative.

Phi Sigma Pi will host information sessions on Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. in 305 Ferguson Center and Sept. 9 at 8:30 p.m. in 312 Ferguson Center. This national co-ed honors fraternity also will have a table setup in Ferguson Center on Sept. 8 from 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. More information: Mary Nell Coleman.
