UA to hold engineering open house

The University of Alabama’s college of engineering will host Engineering Day, or E-Day, an open house for high school students and their families from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 2. E-Day gives prospective students a closer look at the College of Engineering, according to Kevin Whitaker, associate dean of academic programs. All interested students, counselors, teachers and parents are invited to attend. “E-Day is a great opportunity for students who are interested in math and science to tour our College, find out about the various fields of engineering and consider their future career plans,” Whitaker said….

Birmingham News – Sept. 9

The University of Alabama has received a $580,000 gift from the estate of former Cherokee County teacher G. Louise Green, which will be used to endow the M. Jack Green and G. Louise Green Scholarship Fund. The fund, named in memory of Louise Green and her brother, also a former educator, will be used to support scholarships for students from Cherokee, DeKalb or Etowah counties majoring in nursing, mathematics, physical education or human environmental sciences… — Berry H. “Nick” Tew Jr., an adjunct professor of geological sciences at the University of Alabama and director of the Geological Survey of Alabama, has begun a one-year term as president of the Association of American State Geologists…
