Siblings pass on gift of education with scholarship fund

Jack and Louise Green…siblings, who grew up in the shadow of Lookout Mountain with parents who stressed the importance of education, will continue to aid the cause after their deaths. The M. Jack Green and G. Louise Green Scholarship Fund was endowed at the University of Alabama recently with a gift of $582,905 from the Green family estate…’Occasionally, [gifts will] come out of the blue like this,’ said Butch Hughes, UA’s associate director of planned giving. ‘Maybe once or twice a year we have something like this.’…the fund, which will support a scholarship for up to four years for a student from Cherokee, DeKalb or Etowah counties, where the Greens taught, majoring in nursing, math, physical education or human environmental sciences.
UA to honor its oldest living football player

…The backup end who played only eight minutes in the game is the oldest living man to buckle a chin strap in a Crimson Tide jersey. The UA National Alumni Association will honor him and two others at today’s Tulane game with the Bryant Alumni-Athlete award, in recognition of their civic accomplishments. Honored along with McLeod are Barbara Mack Harding, a gymnast from the 1980s, and George “Duke” McCain Jr., a football player from the 1950s…

JAZZ — MAL MOORE, University of Alabama’s director of athletics, sent an e-mail to Crimson Tide fans reminding them that the Tulane University football team had been displaced by a storm for the second time in three years. He urged them to greet the Green Wave “with an enthusiastic, warm round of applause when they take the field Saturday night” That’s class.
University goes green on game day

…A recycling tent will be placed east of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library on the Quad. The tent will serve as a sort of recycling headquarters where fans can drop off recyclable material and, as a reward, have their names placed in a drawing for prizes. More than a dozen recycling bins will be placed across the Quad and staff members will walk around the hundreds of tailgating sites handing out bags. They will also pick up the bags and take them to the recycling tent. “We’re trying to make it as easy as possible for people,” said Tony Johnson, director of UA’s logistics and support services. “We want to get as many people involved as we can.”…

The reality is that most voters identify with one party and vote with that party in most cases, she said. “With McCain’s vice presidential selection he has energized the Republican base where one of the main concerns is family values,” she said. “But it’s also a year with new candidates, and it’s historic because there is an African-American candidate and now the Republicans have a female running mate. The University Of Alabama Culverhouse College Of Commerce and the Business Council of Alabama will present the 2008 Economic Summit for Alabama Leaders on Oct. 15 at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel. The half-day event, which will close with a luncheon program featuring Gov. Bob Riley, is the first in a planned series of annual economic summits intended to bring together the economic expertise of Alabama’s public and private sectors…Barry Mason, dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce, said the summit offers the state’s business community an excellent opportunity to share information and gain a larger perspective on the Alabama economy. “Economic summits have been shown to be valuable tools for bringing into focus key economic indicators and trends,” Mason said in a release. “Our mission stresses cooperation, collaboration and partnerships.”…
Students plan to help out on break

…Alternative Winter Break. In its second year, the program is taking eight students to Costa Rica, where, from Dec. 28 to Jan. 6, they will help with a reforestation project and work with indigenous families who have been affected by mudslides. “It’s one thing to be in a classroom and learn about Central America. It is something else to actually venture to the region,” said Josh Burford, the coordinator for freshman community outreach at the Community Service Center. “Service is becoming less abstract. We’re moving from abstract to practical applications.”…
