UA Enrollment Reaches Record 27,052 Students; Freshman Class Tops 5,000

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A record 27,052 students are enrolled at The University of Alabama this fall. The entering freshman class, at 5,116, is the largest in UA history, and marks the first time that the freshman class has exceeded 5,000.

Total enrollment is up by 1,472 students, or 5.75 percent, over fall 2007, and includes an increase of 12.7 percent, or 578 students, in the freshman class. This year’s record enrollment represents a major step in UA’s planned and steady growth toward total enrollment of 28,000 by 2010.

“These numbers reflect the quality of our academic programs and the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff,” said Dr. Judy Bonner, UA executive vice president and provost. “We are especially pleased to welcome another outstanding freshman class.”

  • The freshman class includes 1,012 students who had a 4.0 or higher grade point average in high school.
  • One in five freshmen is enrolled in UA’s Honors College. To be accepted to Honors College as an entering freshman, students must score at the 95th percentile or higher on a college admission test.
  • The number of freshmen from Alabama has steadily increased to a record-high enrollment of 3,223 in this year’s class – a 6 percent increase over fall 2007.
  • Enrollment of African-Americans is also up significantly with 526 African-Americans in the freshman class, a 37 percent increase over the fall 2007 class.

Total enrollment includes students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Military-Europe, Military-Pacific and 72 countries.
