The last day to add classes to your schedule through myBama is Aug. 27.

You may now drop all but your last course online via myBama through Oct. 29. By dropping through myBama, you assume all responsibility for this action and cannot be re-added to the course. If you drop a class after Aug. 28 you will receive a “W” for the class.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

UA Safer Living Guide is available online. To help make the campus community a safe and secure place in which to live, work, and learn, the UA Police Department asks that you review the UA Safer Living Guide and take an active role in protecting yourself from crime while living on campus.

Please be familiar with UA’s severe weather guidelines (http://uanews.ua.edu/severeweather.htm) and be prepared to quickly move to safety if severe weather occurs. In general, classes will remain in session until the National Weather Service issues tornado warnings for the city of Tuscaloosa. UA issues tornado warnings using the following methods: Tide Text Alerts, (sign up on myBama), UA home page alert, media alerts to local radio and TV stations, weather radar siren, and e-mail alerts to faculty, staff and students. Individuals should take the necessary precautions to ensure personal safety.

On Aug. 31, the new online “My Football Ticket” tab will be available from the Action Card Web site. This site allows students with tickets who do not plan to attend a game to either give their ticket to a specific student or give it to the ticket pool. Students who either attend all of the games and/or give their tickets to another student will be eligible for prize drawings. Click on the My Football Ticket box and you can access instructional videos and materials and the login page for the tab. Questions: Action Card office at 348-2288.

The UA Writing Center has moved to 121 Wilson Hall for the 2008-2009 academic year. Wilson is located behind Moore Hall just off of Sixth Avenue. The UA Writing Center provides writing tutoring for all UA students. Appointments are encouraged and walk-ins are welcome. More information: www.as.ua.edu/writingcenter.

The intramural sports department is looking for officials for flag football, soccer and volleyball. The department will host a job fair Aug. 27 & 28 at 7 p.m. in the Student Activity Center, which is located inside the Student Recreation Center. More information: intramural office at 348-8055.

Upcoming events for intramural sports. Online College Football Pick’em will be registering until Aug. 29. The following sports/events will be registering from Aug. 26–Sept. 2 at the intramural office: online NFL fantasy football, tennis singles and dodgeball. Student Alumni Association is now accepting applications. Applications are available at www.saa.ua.edu and are due Aug. 29 by 6 p.m. to saa@bama.ua.edu or by 4 p.m. to Alumni Hall.

Students for Concealed Carry on Campus will meet Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Forum. More information: visit www.scccatua.com or e-mail info@scccatua.com.

All incoming freshmen and students living on campus (dorms, fraternities, sororities, and any other campus housing) are required to have received a meningococcal vaccine. The American College Health Association and the Centers for Disease Control report that students living on college campuses have a higher risk of contracting meningitis and recommend preventative vaccination. All other students on campus also are encouraged to have this vaccination. Manactra (the recommended vaccine) is available at the Student Health Center. Most insurance companies pay for this vaccine, but you should check with your insurance representative.

Weight management study for students. Do you think you might be overweight? If so, you may qualify to participate in a research study for students that may help you lose weight. Free visits with a dietitian and a personal trainer are included as part of the study. More information: Lori Greene at 348-0205.

The deadline for submissions to the UA/Hispanic Latino World photo exhibit is Aug. 28 During Hispanic Latino Heritage Month, Crossroads will host a photo exhibit in the Crossroads Lounge about UA and the Hispanic Latino World. Crossroads is seeking photos representing the Hispanic and Latino Culture reflected in UA students, the Tuscaloosa Community and UA students studying abroad. Please submit your photo and include three to four sentences about why the photo is important to you and what it represents. Also include your name, year and contact information.
