Olympic Development soccer camps return to UA
Tuscaloosa News – July 10

After a two-year absence, the Olympic Development Program soccer camps have returned to the University of Alabama. The camps, in their 11th year at UA and 13th overall, consist of the best players ages 12 to 17 from 11 states stretching as far west as Oklahoma and as far east as North Carolina. Over the course of the nine-day camp experience, 1,850 players will participate under the guidance of 125 coaches and administrators. ‘What we want to provide at the University of Alabama is the environment to allow everyone to excel,’ Student Recreation Center Executive Director George Brown said…All 37 acres of the UA Rec fields, as well the UA Soccer Complex, are being utilized. ‘We have to provide field space, dormitory space, food and transportation. It all has to work together like a mini-city for nine days,’ Brown said. ‘We have people from housing, we have people from food service, we have people from Crimson Ride. We’ve got a real team of Alabama people wanting to keep this camp and do this.’…

Four teams from Alabama in top six of the College Bass National Championship

UA reaches out to state community colleges

…The Alabama College Transfer Advising Corps is seeking 10 qualified individuals to act as transfer advisers at community colleges around the state. The advisers will be temporary, full-time employees of the University and will help students at rural community colleges in Alabama apply for admissions, financial aid and housing at universities across the country. The program, implemented by a partnership between the University of Alabama Education Policy Center and the Office of Academic Affairs, is one of 12 separate projects focused on the same goal. The projects are headed by the National College Advising Corps, which operates at the University of Utah, Brown University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Tufts University, the University of Virginia and others…

Greeks prepare for the biggest fall ever

…With the August 1 deadline still three weeks away, almost 1,000 women and more than 300 men have registered for sorority and fraternity recruitment. Compared to the 1,357 women who registered for recruitment week in 2007, the 2008 recruitment class is predicted to be one of the largest in UA history. “This is shaping up to be another record year for recruitment at the Capstone,” said Gentry McCreary, director of Greek affairs. The Department of Greek Affairs at the University of Alabama predicts that more than 1,500 women and 900 men will pledge a Greek organization in the fall…This summer the department of Greek affairs is working with the Center for Teaching and Learning to form a tutoring program for fraternities. This program will be incorporated into the fraternity halls’ study hours in an attempt to raise the academic achievement of the new members…

UA student is professional poker player

So far, his professional poker playing has brought him almost $2 million dollars. Shorr will in Las Vegas through the end of this month. Then, the 23 year-old will come back to Alabama to continue his studies at The University of Alabama. He tells Fox6 News he will change his major from civil engineering to business management.

UA holds camp for prospective engineers

UA students organize Hispanic Jumpstart

Three University of Alabama students have joined forces to tackle the issue of Hispanic children adapting slowly to new customs. Erin Shirley, Wilson Boardman and Laura Dover worked together on forming a program that focuses on helping these children cope with American culture…

UA requires students to participate in online Alcohol EDU course
CBS 42 (Birmingham) – July 9

The University of Alabama system is targeting incoming students with an online course they are required to take before they ever arrive on campus. “Alcohol Edu” is an online course that’s been required of all incoming freshmen since 2006. Margaret Garner of the UA Medical Center says it teaches students the facts about how alcohol affects decisions and how if affects them physically. “You are an adult decision maker, and we want you to make good healthy decisions that keep you safe and well,” said Garner.

Mason announces retirement from DCH board

…Mason, dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration at the University of Alabama, first joined the DCH board in November 1986. He became chairman of the board in 2000, replacing Sam Phelps. Mason announced his retirement to the board…
