This is particularly important given things like Autauga and Elmore coun¬ties receiving district-wide SACS accredita¬tion and The University of Alabama being named to Forbes Magazine’s prestigious best schools list; Alabama ranked No. 7 among public universities.

Sessions, Figures win Senate nominations in Alabama

…William Stewart, a veteran political scientist at the University of Alabama, said the Democratic and Republican outcomes were expected. “They were shoo-ins for their nominations. Sessions and Figures didn’t have to make much of a campaign,” he said. But he said the campaign leading up to the general election Nov. 4 will be much tougher for Figures because Sessions is popular in the state. “His will be one of the most safe Senate seats in the United States as far as 2008,” Stewart said…

…”It should look good for Griffith that he is such an overwhelming Democratic choice, whereas there isn’t a consensus in the Republican party,” said Bill Stewart, political professor emeritus at the University of Alabama. “It wouldn’t be surprising that it would remain Democratic,” he said of the district that includes Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison and Jackson counties and a section of Morgan County. “This is really a Democratic year as far as Congress is concerned.”…

Alabama GOP Faces Runoffs for Two Key House Races

Lanoue, professor and chairman of the political science department at the University of Alabama, said Tuesday night that the failure of the first-round primary contests to produce outright nominees is at least a temporary hindrance to the GOP. “The bad news for the Republicans is it means that the candidates are going to have to spend more money getting through the runoff, burn some dollars better spent on the final race against the Democrats,” Lanoue said. Lanoue said, though, that “there’s plenty of time,” adding that “it’s not a huge setback” for the Republicans…

Cecil Hurt: Children honor Kubiszyn with scholarships

…Fifty years ago, Jack Kubiszyn could do all those things — and did. He was an All-SEC player and a member of Alabama’s fabled ‘Rocket Eight’ in basketball. He was all-conference in baseball, as well. He earned a degree at UA and went on to become a prominent businessman and politician in the Tuscaloosa community…The Kubiszyn children have endowed two scholarships at UA, one for the basketball program and one for the baseball program. The scholarships are designed to assist players who have completed their athletic eligibility but have returned to school to earn their degrees. Trainers and managers in those sports are also eligible for the scholarships…

Alabama-Clemson will be on ABC

The University of Alabama football team will open its season in front of a nationally televised audience. The SEC announced Tuesday that ABC will broadcast the Crimson Tide’s game against Clemson on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m…

Birmingham News – June 4

High school seniors from across the state will be at the University of Alabama this week to attend the American Legion Boys State convention. Students will participate in a mock government and travel to Montgomery to tour the Alabama Capitol. Guest speakers include U.S. Rep. Artur Davis, Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom and UA coach Nick Saban.
