CFOs Earn Low Marks as Class Instructors

…”Often, CFOs fall down because they just get too detailed,” agrees William Petty, a former corporate controller who’s now a full-time instructor at the University of Alabama. “Or they have blinders on, rather than getting students to open their eyes to what’s out there.”…Petty’s advice to visiting finance executives in Alabama’s Operations Management class — at least for their first appearances there — is to avoid the temptation to dig deep into specific corporate or finance-department problems. Take a step back and present a simpler, bigger picture, he recommends. “Let the students know what your company is and what it does. And let them know what’s really expected of a person in the finance department.”…

The University of Alabama College of Engineering will hold two programs this summer for high school and college students. The Engineering Math Advancement Program (E-MAP) is for entering freshmen admitted to engineering for the fall semester and will run July 6-Aug. 8. The Student Introduction to Engineering (SITE) program for high school juniors and seniors will include two sessions, July 6-11 and July 13-18… — Paul S. Ray, professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at the University of Alabama, received the Institute of Industrial Engineers’ Fellow Award during the institute’s annual conference. Ray was recognized for his contributions to engineering and service within the industrial engineering community. — Dr. Deanah Maxwell, a family medicine resident in the University of Alabama’s College of Community Health Sciences, received the Student Leadership Award from the National Rural Health Association during the 2008 Rural Health Awards. Josh Bell, a third-year medical student in UA’s Rural Medical Scholars Program, was presented the association’s 2008 Student Achievement Award. — Faythe Freese, associate professor of organ in the University of Alabama School of Music, will spend four days in Paris in June to record a CD at L’Eglise de la Sainte-Trinite.
