Alabama Housing Affordability Index Highest Since First Quarter of 2005, According to UA Center

The good news for Alabama residents is that housing is again becoming more affordable for home buyers, according to the Alabama Center for Real Estate at The University of Alabama. The first quarter results from the Alabama Housing Affordability Index are the highest since the first quarter of 2005.

• Spring commencement ceremonies will be held Saturday, May 10 in Coleman Coliseum. Universitywide commencement ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to award degrees. Ceremonies will be broadcast live over the Internet. The webcast will be archived on UA’s Web site and will be available for viewing until May 31. •

State’s Hispanic Population Increases 1 Percent Since 2000, According to UA’s State Data Center

The U.S. Census Bureau has just released its latest look at the racial and ethnic makeup of the United States and the Hispanic population is now 15 percent of the total. Alabama is behind the national percentage in Hispanic population, but is gaining, from 1.7 percent in 2000 to 2.7 in 2007.

Minority Business Forum Focuses on How to Do Business with UA

To encourage more partnerships with minority contractors and vendors, The University of Alabama Unity Affairs and Financial Affairs Offices have teamed up to host the third Minority Business Forum on Tuesday, May 6, at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

UA Announces Winners of Student Funded SGA S.P.I.R.I.T. Scholarships

Winners of scholarships funded by The University of Alabama’s Student Government Association S.P.I.R.I.T. campaign were announced today during a celebration event at Gorgas Library. Four UA students, all first-generation college students, were selected to receive the awards funded by their fellow students. The SGA S.P.I.R.I.T. campaign asked students to donate $2 each to UA for “first-in-family” scholarships.
