TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A new ranking of colleges and universities ranks The University of Alabama seventh in the nation among public universities. The ranking also places UA 42nd among all national universities, both public and private.
The rankings by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP), a two-year-old research organization in Washington, D.C., were published in the May 19 issue of Forbes magazine, which is currently on the newsstand.
According to the Forbes article, the rankings evaluate colleges on criteria including student evaluations as posted on Ratemyprofessors.com, college graduation rates and the percentage of students winning top national awards such as Rhodes Scholarships and undergraduate Fulbright travel grants. The results-oriented study also used “Who’s Who in America” to assess professional achievement of graduates.
“While we are always pleased when our programs receive national recognition, these rankings are especially gratifying because they are based on student evaluations as well as graduation rates and the success of our students in winning national awards and scholarships,” said Dr. Judy Bonner, UA executive vice president and provost.
“Clearly, this ranking reflects the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff in providing an outstanding education to our students.”
According to Richard Vedder, CCAP director, the rankings aim to evaluate colleges on results, using criteria that answer questions such as do students like their courses and how successful are they after graduation. The only public universities ranked above UA are the University of Virginia, the University of California-Berkeley, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the College of William and Mary, the University of California-Los Angeles and the University of Michigan.
