EVENTS, ARTS & CULTURE

University Programs will host movies and free food on the Quad at sundown every Sunday in April. “Cloverfield” will be shown on April 20. More information: Rachel E. Kelly at 348-7525.

Take Back the Night will be April 22 at 6 p.m. in front of Denny Chimes. Speak out against sexual assault at this internationally recognized rally/march and enjoy music, poetry, speakers and empowerment. More information: Stacy Panitch at 348-5040.

Earth Day 2008 will be April 20 from 10 a.m.–7 p.m. on the Quad. The UA chapter of the Alabama Environmental Council will host this event as its 15th annual celebration of the planet. Come enjoy bands, visit booths representing local businesses and campus organizations, and learn about environmental issues that concern you. No shoes required. More information: Stephen Spikes.

Phi Sigma Pi honor society will host a car wash on April 19 from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. at Guthrie’s on 15th Street and Buffalo Wild Wings on McFarland Boulevard. Both businesses will have specials for car wash customers. Car washes will cost $3, but donations are welcome. More information: Emily Drummond at 205-937-6608.

The Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra will have a TSO Pops Concert April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Moody Music Concert Hall. Conductor/guitar soloist Tom Wolfe of UA’s music department will lead with special guests in jazzy interpretations of familiar classics from the movies, Broadway and more. Tickets: $5-$40 available at www.tsoonline.org, symphony office at 752-5515, and at the box office the afternoon of the performance.

The third annual AL’s Award Show will be May 1 from 7:30–10 p.m. in Morgan Auditorium. The night will highlight and honor some of the best and brightest performers, artists, actors, musicians, writers, and directors on campus. Presenters and performers are needed. Alabama leaders are coming to UA to talk about state government. The UA Freshman Forum Public Policy Team invites all students to a conversation hour with Alabama Supreme Court Justice Glen Murdock and Alabama Secretary of State Beth Chapman on April 21 from 7-8 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. The Student Alumni Association presents “Big Man on Campus” April 17 at 7 p.m. in Ferguson Theater. Male contestants will compete for the title of “Big Man on Campus,” receive gifts and help allocate student leadership scholarships. More information or tickets: Casey Gann at 348-1553.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

Homecoming is quickly approaching and the SGA needs your help. Submit your ideas for a Homecoming theme. Previous themes include: 175 Years of Crimson Glory: Welcome Home, All Tide Together, The Changing Tide, and Reflections.

The Quad entrance to Gorgas Library is closed due to repairs and renovations taking place in the second floor lobby. The Capstone Drive entrance will remain open throughout the renovation process. Renovations are expected to be completed by late summer. More information: Harriet Deason at 348-5540.

Interested in making off-campus living safer? Become a student captain for your neighborhood as part of the CrimsonWatch program brought to you by SGA and UAPD. As a captain, you will serve as a liaison between your area and UAPD initiating programs to make students safer off-campus. More information: Louise Crow at 348-8265.

“Marr’s Field Journal,” UA’s undergraduate literary magazine, will be available for sale at the Ferguson Center the weeks of April 14 and April 21. The journal features original poetry, prose, photography, and music submissions. Cost: $12. More information: Leah Blake at (334) 524-4345.

UA FirstConnection will host a field day for a local elementary school on April 18 at 12:30 p.m. Get involved in the community by volunteering to help. More information: Craig Lawrence at (205) 540-7910.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Honors Week is April 14-18. The University will recognize the scholarship and leadership of students and faculty with 2008 Honors Week activities. The Tapping on the Mound ceremony will be Friday, April 18, at 2 p.m. on the Mound at the west side of the Quad.

Apply for an SGA book scholarship for the fall semester. Nine $400 scholarships will be awarded. Applications are available at the SGA Office, 356 Ferguson, and are due back in the SGA office by 4:45 p.m. on April 18. More information: Sarah Simpler.
