UA offers online nursing classes

…thanks to a University of Alabama program that allows registered nurses with associate degrees to take online classes to obtain their bachelor’s or master’s degrees…The University of Alabama’s College of Nursing has already partnered with 11 community colleges and seven health care agencies, including DCH Health System and the Alabama Department of Public Health, to administer the program, and this month the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the private home health care company Amedisys are signing on to allow their employees to take part in the program…The motivation for the program is high. Registered nurses who have associate’s degrees cannot become nurse practitioners or teach nursing without getting bachelor’s degrees. A bachelor’s degree can open many doors, said Jeanette VanderMeer, RN mobility program coordinator at UA. ‘This allows them to move up and advance their education without coming to campus,’ VanderMeer said…
Architects finalize nursing building design plans

Architects are arranging plans to build a new building for nursing students and faculty, which will be located across from DCH Regional Medical Center on University Boulevard. Dean of the Capstone College of Nursing Sara Barger said she is looking forward to working in the new building…The nursing building is currently in Russell Hall, which previously was the Student Health Center. Barger said the building was not adequately designed for a nursing school. “It was built as the Student Health Center, not a nursing building,” Barger said. The nursing school has dramatically grown in recent years, making it difficult for students and faculty to comfortably work, Barger said. In five years, the enrollment for the college has increased 225 percent, she said…
Chamber adds new class of ‘civic giants’ to hall

Six notable Tuscaloosa residents were inducted into the Tuscaloosa County Civic Hall of Fame in a ceremony Wednesday…“With respect to my participation, it really pales in comparison to the pleasures and rewards I’ve derived from being involved in the community,” said inductee Roger Sayers, who served as the University of Alabama’s president from 1989 to 1996 and was commended for his civil leadership, volunteer efforts and the fostering of better town-gown relations during his time as president…Rodgers was a professor of business statistics at UA for more than 41 y ears. In 1981, the college’s science and engineering library was named in honor of her and her husband, Eric Rodgers. She was involved in many organizations, including the Alabama Association for Crippled Children and Adults, West Alabama Rehab Center and the West Alabama Health Planning Board. Rodgers died in 1998…

The 2008 inductees are:…Sarah Ella Haughton Rodgers, a professor of business at University of Alabama for more than 41 years who was also active in many civic organizations…E. Roger Sayers, who as UA president from 1989 to 1996 worked to build bridges between the university and the broader community…It is a worthy class, and Tuscaloosa has been the beneficiary.
School of Social Work gives back to faculty member

…there will be a benefit at Little Willie’s for Susan Broughton, the manager of fiscal affairs for the School of Social Work. Broughton was diagnosed with stage IV mucosal melanoma cancer and is faced with mounting medical expenses…Cassie Simon, an associate professor for the School of Social Work, said this is the second benefit given by the school. The first benefit was held last year for a doctoral student diagnosed with rectal cancer…Simon said Broughton is facing many unpaid days missed of work. “Susan’s condition has brought to light a need for that kind of sick pool program,” Simon said.
