Housing grows with campus

…It will be the last residence hall built before the University’s enrollment hits 28,000 students, and the last portion of the most recent growth spurt of on-campus housing. Though no new residence halls are in the works, many of the changes for housing on- and off-campus are just starting…Instead of immediately tearing down a building because of the demand, David Jones, executive director of HRC, said they want to have one or two major renovation projects each summer, starting with Friedman Hall this coming summer and Harris Hall in summer 2009…

Nobel Prize winner explains his research

Students, faculty and cake were on hand Friday for a lecture by the 2007 Nobel Prize winner in physics Albert Fert, who was also celebrating his 70th birthday. The talk was hosted by the UA Center for Materials and Information Technology and the department of physics and astronomy…

Students collect books for Black Belt schools

The Black Belt Book Drive has been designed to help increase the value of reading and education in the Black Belt communities by increasing available resources to local schools. The drive will benefit seven different Black Belt counties, including Greene, Hale and Choctaw. Backed by the Center of Economic Development, the SGA and the Community Service Center, the Black Belt Book Drive is now being held for the second year in a row. The book drive collects monetary donations and children’s books, all of which will be sent to elementary schools in the Black Belt region…

UA junior creates endowed fund

…Phillips Thomas, a junior majoring in international studies, said she participated in Black Belt Action during interim term 2007, and the experience will stay with her a long time to come…Thomas said she decided an endowed fund to support the Black Belt Action program would be a great gift to celebrate her birthday. “I have everything I really need,” Thomas said. “I wanted to be able to help lift the budget restrictions on this great program.”…

Alabama Launchpad announces finalists

Teams from the University of Alabama have earned five of the eight finalist slots in the second annual Alabama Launchpad business plan competition. The finale will be April 13-14 at the Bryant Conference Center on the campus of the University of Alabama…

Thompson named international scholar

Gregory Thompson, a UA assistant professor of metallurgical and materials engineering, has been chosen as the 2008 Minerals, Metals and Materials Society Young Leaders International Scholar. As an International Scholar for the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, known as the TMS, Thompson will travel to Japan to speak at the Japanese Institute of Metals. There, Thompson said he will speak about the research being done at the UA Center for Materials for Information Technology using magnetic nanoparticles…

Alpha Phi to open next semester

Local children hunt for eggs at annual Junior Panhellenic event

…The hunt is an annual event hosted by the Junior Panhellenic, said Collier Broadaway, the Panhellenic director of education. “It’s a good way to get the community involved,” Broadaway said. “It brings parents and children [to the University] during the spring.”…
