Students from UA Take Honors at Journalism Conference

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama students representing the UA Office of Student Media took top spots in the Southeast Journalism Conference held recently at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

In the Best of the South category, students contributed work before the conference and in on-site competition.

The SEJC Best of South winners from UA included:

Amanda Peterson of Vestavia Hills, a sophomore majoring in journalism and Spanish, received first place for best news reporter

Hyla DeWitt of Charleston, S.C., a senior majoring in advertising, received first place for best advertising staff member.

Jessie Patterson of Tuscaloosa, a senior majoring in journalism, received second place for best sports writer.

Laura Pitts of Oakman, a junior majoring in journalism and English, received third place for best arts and entertainment writer.

Mike Faulk of Spanish Fort, a senior majoring in journalism, received third place for best public service.

On-site competition Championship winners from UA included:

Andrea K. Mabry of Pelham, a junior majoring in photojournalism and computer-based honors, received second place for photography.

Jessie Patterson of Tuscaloosa, a senior majoring in journalism, received second place for sports writing.

The Office of Student Media is part of Student Affairs. It gives students experience working with media through The Crimson White, WVUA 90.7 The Capstone, The Southern Historian, Marr’s Field Journal and Black Warrior Review.
