TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Ramana G. Reddy, ACIPCO Professor and head of the department of metallurgical and materials engineering at The University of Alabama, was recently recognized as one of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration’s 2008 Distinguished Members.
The Distinguished Member Award is presented to select members of SME who have distinguished themselves by demonstrating significant contributions to the minerals industry.
With more than 24 years of teaching and research experience in the field of chemical and materials engineering, Reddy has previously been recognized as a Fellow of ASM International. He received the Service Award and the Best Research Paper Award from The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society’s light metals division, and has received SME’s Wadsworth Award. Reddy was a 2006 Henry Krumb lecturer and is an Eminent Engineer of the Tau Beta Pi Society.
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration is an international society of professionals in the minerals industry. With more than 11,500 members, SME has chapters in nearly 100 countries.
In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 2,300 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last seven years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
