Genes Linked to Parkinson’s Protection Identified

University of Alabama researchers working in animal models have identified five genes displaying protective capabilities against a hallmark trait of Parkinson’s disease. The research, published January 8 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’ Early Edition, is a possible step toward identifying both new targets for drug treatment development and genetic factors that make some people more susceptible to the disease, the researchers said. “We’ve found five genes so far that significantly protect dopamine neurons from dying within our animal models,” said Dr. Guy Caldwell, associate professor of biological sciences at UA and co-author of the research…

UA student newsletter hitting inboxes soon

Students received an e-mail Wednesday informing them of a new tool for campus information, the UA Student Newsletter. The newsletter, which will first go out Jan. 29, is designed to decrease the ever-prevalent spam issues students are encountering and organize information from the University to its students. “One of the things we realized is University students get a lot of e-mails from the institution, all of it very important information, but the volume made it hard sometimes to know what to pay attention to first,” said UA spokeswoman Deborah Lane…

Tuscaloosa County led state’s big markets in ‘07 real estate sales growth

Student photographs fill exhibit of Black Belt

The UA Center for Community-Based Partnerships and the Black Belt Community Foundation in Selma put the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” to the test with the 100 Lenses Documentary Project. The project brought students from the Black Belt region together to create pictures that depict life in the area.
