UA Students to Present Designs for Campus Peace Garden

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama art students will present proposals for a UA Peace Garden, a project to promote campus diversity, Wednesday, Oct. 17 in 205 Gorgas Library at 3:30 p.m.

The UA Peace Garden, which comes from the collaboration of the UA Crossroads Community Center and the Intercultural Student Council, will utilize colors, symbols and art to create a cross-cultural area reflective of the many cultures on campus. The garden will also foster interdisciplinary collaborations by creating an outdoor classroom that focuses on diversity.

Upon completion of the garden, the Crossroads Community Center and Intercultural Student Council will seek recognition from Gardens for Peace, a nonprofit international network of gardens promoting peace. Acceptance into Gardens for Peace will place the UA Peace Garden into a worldwide network.

Crossroads Community Center provides campus cultural programming and intercultural education to facilitate relationship building through innovative programs and initiatives.

Crossroads also provides resources for organizations regarding cross-cultural issues, provides leadership and coordination for professionals in multicultural affairs and prepares students for demographic shifts in a global society.

The Crossroads Community Center is an initiative of the Office of Community Affairs under the direction of Dr. Samory Pruitt.

The Intercultural Student Council is a group of culturally diverse students whose role is to foster awareness and appreciation of cultural differences on campus. Council members believe that awareness and appreciation can improve cross-cultural competence, minimize prejudice and increase equity across all cultural lines.
