TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority Inc. recently awarded its national scholarship to a University of Alabama student who has spent the past year battling stereotypes and promoting multiculturalism.
The sorority awarded the Brandy Nicole “Nikki” Murphy Scholarship to Kimberly Goins of Mobile in June during the organization’s national convention in Baltimore.
The scholarship was named in memory of UA student Brandy Nicole Murphy of Florence, who died in an automobile accident last year. Murphy was an active member of the sorority’s Kappa Associate chapter while pursuing a degree in athletic training.
Goins will serve as the chapter’s president when she begins law school at the University this fall. She is a member of numerous student organizations and honor societies including Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board and the Blackburn Institute. She spearheaded the first Multicultural Day at the University in conjunction with the SGA and facilitated Delta Xi Phi’s “Ring the Alarm Forum” which explored stereotypes of African-American women.
The scholarship recipient will be announced annually at Delta Xi Phi’s national convention. The amount of the scholarship will be contingent upon the amount of donations received. This year’s scholarship was for $500.

Since then, the sorority has grown to 17 chapters in 13 states.
