TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Eric S. Williams, associate professor of healthcare management at the Culverhouse College of Commerce at The University of Alabama, has been elected to the leadership team of the Health Care Management Division of the Academy of Management.
Williams will serve a five-year term, which consists of rotation through a succession of duties. Initially, he will be program chair-elect for 2007-2008 and responsible for carrying out the organization’s pre-conference professional development workshop in August 2008.
In 2008-2009, he will serve as program chair and will be responsible for developing the general program for the Health Care Management Division’s annual conference in August 2009.
In 2009-2010, Williams will become division chair-elect and will be responsible for a special session and guest speaker. In 2010-2011, he will serve as division chair and will be responsible for leading the health care management division. In 2011-2012, he will become immediate past division chair and will chair the nominations committee.
The Health Care Management Division provides a forum for research presentation and an opportunity for interaction among professionals with interests in research and management in the health services industry.
Major topics include: performance of health care workers and organizations; public policy issues, such as access to care, competition, cost control and quality of care, and their implications for managing health care organizations; health care finance and marketing; and empirical or conceptual application of theory in health care organizations.
Williams received his bachelor’s from the University of Texas, and earned his master’s at Purdue University. He attended State University of New York at Buffalo (doctoral), and the University of North Carolina (NRSA Post-Doctoral Fellow).
Williams has had his work published in a number of management, health care, and medical journals including Health Services Research, Journal of Management, Medical Care, Medical Care Research and Review, Health Care Management Review, Journal of General Internal Medicine and Journal of Family Practice.
He has made more than 30 presentations at national conferences and served as a reviewer. He received the 2000 Best Paper Award from the Health Care Management Division of the Academy of Management, the 1996 Best Poster Award from the Association of Health Services Research and the 1992 Best Empirical Paper from the Eastern Academy of Management. He is an active member of the Academy of Management, the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society, the Academy Health and the Southern Management Association.
