Local Students Participate in GEAR UP Summer Program at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama GEAR UP Program’s annual Summer Enrichment Academy for students from Davis-Emerson Middle School and Holt High School is under way on the UA campus.

The Academy, continuing through June 23, is designed to improve academic preparation and expand options for career and postsecondary education for the 26 student-participants.

GEAR UP Instructors are conducting academic classes designed to assist students in readiness for the upcoming academic year. In addition to curriculum support, students experience job shadowing and learn about Tuscaloosa area resources.

GEAR UP is financially supported through a 50/50 match of funds and in-kind services between community partners and the U. S. Department of Education. Community partners include Shelton State Community College, the Tuscaloosa County Schools, The University of Alabama Center for Teaching and Learning, College of Education, School of Social Work, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Office of Financial Aid, and Tuscaloosa’s One Place: A Family Resource Center.
