TUSCALOOSA, Ala – Broderick Ryans, a junior at Holt High School, has been selected as a 2006 Youth Leadership Summit Scholar by The University of Alabama GEAR UP project.

As one of the 30 students selected nationwide, Ryans will attend the Youth Leadership Summit next month in Washington, D.C. The Summit will be held in conjunction with the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships/GEAR UP Annual Conference.

The Summit’s goal is for the scholars to discuss the challenges facing education from their perspective and to work collectively to develop and present a report to the general conference.

“I hope to show my country what students my age have to offer and what we can accomplish with the right resources,” said Ryans. “I ultimately hope to demonstrate to my school and state the leadership skills I learn during the summit.”

The GEAR UP project provides support services to students enrolled in grades seven and eight at Davis-Emerson Middle School and grades nine through twelve at Holt High School. The project is financially supported through a 50/50 match of funds and in-kind services between community partners and the United States Department of Education.

GEAR UP community partners include The University of Alabama Center for Teaching and Learning, College of Education, School of Social Work, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and Office of Financial Aid; The Tuscaloosa County Schools, Shelton State Community College and Tuscaloosa’s One Place: A Family Resource Center.
