UA Provost Judy Bonner Promoted to Executive Vice President

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Board of Trustees has approved the recommendation of University of Alabama President Robert E. Witt that Dr. Judy Bonner, who currently serves as vice president for academic affairs and provost, be promoted to executive vice president and provost effective April 1.

“This promotion recognizes Dr. Bonner’s extraordinary administrative contributions to the University and will facilitate the reorganization of the Office for Academic Affairs to both enhance effectiveness and efficiency and to support increased coordination among the Offices for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Research,” Witt said. “Dr. Bonner is an extremely effective and dedicated leader. The University of Alabama is very fortunate to have her serving in this important position.”

Under Bonner’s leadership, the University has created a highly successful Honors College. Since her original appointment as provost and academic affairs vice president in 2003, she has appointed outstanding deans in the College of Education, College of Engineering, Honors College and the College of Community Health Sciences.

She has been instrumental in helping carry out the University’s plans for enrollment growth emphasizing the recruitment of the brightest and best students to the Capstone. Enrollment at UA was a record 21,750 this fall. The class included a record 145 National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic scholars.

Before being appointed provost in 2003, Bonner served for 13 years as dean of the UA College of Human Environmental Sciences and has been on the UA faculty for 25 years. She also served as assistant academic vice president from 1985-1990. Her area of research expertise is in clinical nutrition. She holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from The University of Alabama and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
