The University of Alabama Police Department will be relocated to New Hall in October, Dr. Lynda Gilbert, UA vice president for financial affairs, has announced. The specific dates of the move will be announced to the University community when they are finalized. There will be no interruption of police service during the move. UAPD will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The business office hours of 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. will remain the same and the phone numbers will not change.
UAPD is expected to be housed at New Hall for 18 months to two years. Gilbert said the University had been exploring options for a new facility for UAPD for some time. “Gorgas Hall is an old building that does not adequately meet the space and accessibility needs of the police department,” she said. The site for a permanent home for UAPD is currently under review.
Gorgas Hall, home to UAPD since the 1960s, will be torn down to make way for a new building for the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. The fraternity will move across University Boulevard from its present house, which will be replaced by the new entrance way to Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Plans were already underway to move the locksmith and key shop and the security technologies function from Gorgas Hall to 600 University Boulevard East (building “C”) in October. The specific date for that move will also be announced to the community. Business hours will remain 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
UAPD can be reached at 348-5454.
