Melissa Allen has never wanted her sometimes painful, incurable disease to define her life, but the compassionate nursing care she received as a frightened, hospitalized child helped crystallize her career choice. Within a week of her graduation from The University of Alabama on May 10, this 22-year-old woman is scheduled to begin her nursing career in the special care unit of Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
