UA Women’s Resource Center Holds April Events

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center is hosting a number of events this month. All of the events are free and open to the public; they include:

  • April 19-30, Wounded Heart, a survivor art exhibit that offers visual testimony to the impact of violence in our lives, will be on display in Burke Hall. Survivors and those who work with survivors use wooden hearts as vehicles of expression and healing.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday, April 20-21, Sexual Harassment, Assault & Rape Prevention training (SHARP self-defense) class will be offered to all females from 12:30-5 p.m. The course is free, but participants may choose to purchase the SHARP self-defense manual for $10. The training is a combination of discussion on psychological risk-reduction strategies of self-defense followed by basic physical techniques. The class is limited to 40 participants. Moderate physical exercise is involved, so wear comfortable clothing. Participants are required to attend all sessions to receive a certificate of training.
  • Thursday, April 22, “Voices Against Violence” Open Microphone Night at Bad Ass Coffee. This event is in conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and is designed to create a forum of expression for anyone who would like to speak out about violence against women or the violence that exists in our world today. VAV will be held at 7 p.m. and is not limited to music and speech, it is a venue seeking to highlight various forms of creativity.
