Katie Boyd — At UA There’s Just Something About that Name

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama has seen a number of great things from the outgoing Student Government Association president, Katie Boyd of Enterprise. During her four years at UA, Boyd has been involved in a number of organizations and activities and won several prestigious awards.

Due to this amount of recognition, the name Katie Boyd at UA has become a name associated with success, accomplishments and service. But, as the outgoing SGA president prepares to graduate and begin a new chapter, a new Katie Boyd is there to take her place.

The new Katie Boyd is a 19 year-old freshman from Pelham. This Boyd, who was recently crowned Miss UA 2004, also plays an active role on campus as well, serving as a Capstone Scholar, recipient of the Alumni Honors Scholarship, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society member, a member of the SGA, Emerging Leaders, Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre and Dance Alabama.

The new Miss UA’s platform is “Take 5-Educational Program for the Awareness of Peer Pressure in Middle School.” Her first public appearance as the 2004 Miss UA was in February at the Tuscaloosa VA Hospital. After graduation, her career plans are to attend graduate school and eventually work with special needs children.

Outgoing SGA president, Katie Boyd has been extremely involved on campus with a number of activities that include serving as president of her sorority, Chi Omega, Anderson Society, the XXXI Women’s Honorary, Blackburn Institute, Mortar Board, Blue Key, Omicron Delta Kappa, the Other Club, Capstone Men and Women (2001-03), Student Member of the Board of Trustees, Human Relations Council, and the Forty Year Planning Committee.

SGA president Boyd has also received prestigious honors including the 2004 Algernon Sydney Sullivan UA Premier Award and the 2004 Outstanding Senior Award given by the UA National Alumni Association.

The outgoing SGA president has served the University in a number of ways through her leadership roles, countless hours of work and desire to improve the UA campus for all students. Aside from all of her organizations and activities, Boyd said the thing she would miss most about graduating are the people.

“The people at the University of Alabama are one of a kind. The students, faculty, and administration have a unique relationship making this University feel like home,” Boyd said.

After graduation Boyd plans to move to Washington, D.C., to work for U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Alabama) and then attend law school the following fall.

Besides sharing the same name, both girls share a passion for success in their own unique way at UA and throughout Tuscaloosa and surrounding communities as well. The name Katie Boyd is only a coincidence, but the willingness and desire to help serve the needs of others is a common goal for both.
