UA Students to Take Part in American Cancer Society Relay for Life

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Students and faculty at The University of Alabama will once again participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, April 16, at 5:30 p.m. on the UA Quad.

Members of the UA community are uniting in the fight to find a cure for cancer and honoring the memory of those lives that have been affected by this disease.

The ACS Relay for Life is the nation’s largest fund raiser. It is a non-competitive, overnight event in which teams, recruited from clubs, families, friends, service organizations or societies, walk or run around the quad all night to raise money for cancer research.

Luminaries will also line the quad on April 16 honoring the memory of those who have lost their fight with cancer and those who triumphed over the disease. Luminaries are $5 each and may be pre-purchased at the Tuscaloosa ACS office located at 2132 McFarland Blvd., 205/758-0700, or may be purchased on the quad the night of the event.

“We encourage everyone in The University of Alabama community to be a part of the Relay for Life,” said Jessica Bradford, UA team recruitment chair. “So far there are 54 teams signed up for the event, and we would like to have all teams signed up by April 5, but we will accept teams up until the start of the event.”

In the 2003 Relay for Life, 24 teams combined to raise over $18,000 for the ACS. The 2004 goal has been set at $34,000. Money raised from the event supports the American Cancer Society research, advocacy and patient services program.
