Media Advisory — Interim State Superintendent of Education to Speak at UA Superintendents Academy Feb. 6

Dr. Joe Morton, newly-named interim superintendent for the Alabama Board of Education, will be on The University of Alabama campus Friday, Feb. 6 to make a presentation to the University of Alabama Superintendents Academy (UASA). This will be one of the first public addresses by Morton since being named interim superintendent in January after Ed Richardson stepped down to become interim president of Auburn University.

Morton will present “Curriculum/Assessment /Accountability for Student Learning,” at 1 p.m. in the Ferguson Center’s Mortar Board room. Dr. Gloria Turner, coordinator of student assessment for the State Department of Education, will co-present with Morton.

Morton’s presentation is part of the UASA’s two-day workshop, Feb. 5-6, dealing with curriculum and instructional leadership issues for the state of Alabama.

The UASA concept was initiated in 2002 by the State Department of Education to assist the department in attracting and training a larger and wider pool of candidates for superintendent positions around the state. UA’s College of Education received a grant from the Department to develop and staff the academy. Participants attend six sessions throughout the year that include communications, legal issues, finance, school improvement/multiculturalism, technology and curriculum.

Also making presentations on Thursday and Friday will be Dr. Rose Mary Newton, UA assistant professor of educational leadership, and superintendents from around the state including Dr. Barry Carroll, Limestone County Schools, Dr. Linda Felton-Smith, Troy City Schools, Dr. Tim Lull, Opp City Schools, Dr. Ann Roy Moore, Huntsville City Schools, Dr. Jodi Newton, Homewood City Schools, and Dr. N. Joyce Sellers, Tuscaloosa County Schools superintendent (retired).
