TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama School of Law will dedicate the site for its planned new building expansion on Friday, Sept. 19, at 1:30 p.m. The site is located behind the existing Law Center.
The addition to the Law Center will provide new classrooms, administrative and faculty offices, a student lounge area and cafeteria, and clinical areas. The Law Center was designed by world-renowned architect Edward Durell Stone and completed in 1978.
Ken Randall, dean of the UA School of Law, said the new addition will respect the modernist architecture of Stone’s design.
“The Law Center has served the law school well for 25 years, but expansions in academic programs and curriculum make an addition necessary in order to serve the student population,” Randall said.
Hicks Stone, son of the current Law Center’s architect, will speak at the site dedication ceremony. Randall will preside at the ceremony. John Saxon, chair of the Building Excellence Fundraising Committee and a 1977 law school graduate, will recognize donors to the campaign, and UA President Robert E. Witt also will speak.
Randall and Elizabeth U. Sadler, assistant dean for advancement, have traveled throughout the state of Alabama and the country calling on alumni and friends to contribute to the Building Excellence expansion project. Supporters have responded with commitments that now total more than $7 million, well over the halfway mark of the $12-13 million necessary to build the expansion.
“The building expansion is fast becoming a reality, and we are grateful to alumni and friends for their commitment to the law school and its students,” Randall said. “The new building will ensure that future classes of Alabama law students have a first-rate facility in which to learn the law and build on the excellence that has placed us in the top tier nationwide. Our mission is to provide the very best in academics and physical environment because we are shaping the next generation of leaders.”
