TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Beginning this fall, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) is sponsoring two recycling programs in University of Alabama residence halls.
Office paper, plastic, aluminum, newspaper and cardboard will be collected as part of one program. “RHA and the Office of Residential Life are committed to the University’s sincere interest in recycling,” said Krista Stringer, president of RHA. “The recycling effort is a great way to get on-campus residents involved in preserving our environment.”
Hall council members collect recycled items at each building, and then the University Facilities department periodically empties the bins and takes them to the city recycling facility.
RHA distributed door hangers to all residence hall residents to inform them of the program. Bins are conveniently located in each hall for the residents to collect the items. Funding for the recycling program is provided by the UA Office of Residential Life. Additional support is being provided by the Facilities Department and each Residence Hall Council. For more information on this project, contact Allan Guenther in Residential Life at 205/348-2472 or Stringer at 205/348-4953.
In addition, the Office of Residential Life is collecting empty toner cartridges as part of a recycling effort with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
“Big Brothers/Big Sisters is committed to making a difference to the children of West Alabama and the environment, and we are pleased to be a part of the toner recycling program,” said Dr. Lisa Skelton, UA Residential Life director.
Residential Life employees and students are asked to turn in their empty toner cartridges to an assigned bin in the central office located on the first floor of Mary Burke East. Participants are asked to put empty cartridges in a plastic bag to prevent ink leaks.
