TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Three University of Alabama publications were named Gold Medalists in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s (CSPA) annual critique for 2002.
The daily student newspaper The Crimson White, the Corolla yearbook and the undergraduate literary magazine Marr’s Field Journal were each named gold medalists as the result of critiques conducted by CSPA, based at Columbia University in New York City.
Luke Connell of Cullman now a staff writer with The Birmingham Post-Herald, was The Crimson White editor for 2001-2002. Donnie Smith of Birmingham was editor of the 2002 Corolla. Matt Supko of Huntsville was editor of 2001-2002 Marr’s Field Journal.
CSPA recruited more than 300 national judges to critique publications. Each judge worked independently from common instructions provided by CSPA.
CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs. Owned by Columbia University since 1925 and operated as a program of its Graduate School of Journalism, the Association now enrolls 1,749 members throughout North America and in certain overseas schools and colleges.
