UA Professors Involved in Disappearing Neutrino Reasearch

Results from the first year of experiments at KamLAND, an underground neutrino detector in central Japan, show that anti-neutrinos emanating from nearby nuclear reactors are “disappearing,” which indicates they have mass and can oscillate or change from one type to another.

UA College of Engineering Announces Three New Cudworth Professorships

The University of Alabama College of Engineering recently announced Drs. Raghvendra Pandey, Robert Pitt and Doru Stefanescu have been appointed Cudworth Professors for their excellence in scholarship, research and teaching. The James R. Cudworth Memorial Engineering Professorship Fund was established in 1984 in memory of James Cudworth, former dean of the College of Engineering.

UA Chapter of the Alabama Environmental Council Sponsors Recycling Drive

The University of Alabama chapter of the Alabama Environmental Council (AEC) started its weeklong campus recycling drive today in front of Morgan Hall on the UA campus. The AEC will collect recyclables from students each day through Friday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

UA Researchers Develop New Method to Stabilize Older Buildings

Dr. Andrew Graettinger, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Dr. Philip Johnson, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, have developed a method of drilling long, straight, small holes in typical building materials without compromising the strength of the structure. This new method will be used for building stabilization, especially in areas that are considered earthquake zones.
