TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Jennifer E. McGintis, a University of Alabama freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn., recently received the Presidential Freedom Scholarship.
The Presidential Freedom Scholarship is presented to students who advocate community service and volunteerism as a charge given by President Bush earlier this year for American citizens to devote at least 4,000 hours or two years to community service.
As a recipient of the honor, McGintis was awarded a $500 scholarship, a certificate from President Bush and a President’s Student Service Award gold pin.
The Tennessee native was recognized for outstanding work done as a senior at Boyd-Buchanan High School in Chattanooga. As a 15-year ballet dancer, McGintis shared her talent with citizens of the community as an instructor for a summer dance program for children called “Dance Alive.”
She also devoted much of her time volunteering as a dancer at nursing homes as a participant of the “Cultural Arts at Home” program sponsored by the Ballet Tennessee dance company. She has performed in free after school programs for families in productions of theater classics such as the Nutcracker. McGintis has volunteered her services to elementary schools and various civic and service organizations.
As a senior in high school, she served as student body president, president of the Girl’s Service Club, captain of the varsity cheerleading squad, and youth Sunday school class teacher. She is a member of Freshman Forum at UA.
