TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Art Students League will hold a silent auction called “Lights … Art … Auction!” on Dec. 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a preview from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Woods Hall Gallery on the UA campus.
In June 2002, a building inspector condemned the lighting in the Woods Hall student gallery. Proceeds from the silent auction of faculty and student art will go toward repair and maintenance of the student gallery, as well as expanding the wall space.
“Art education is extremely important to a well-rounded community,” said John Trobaugh, Art Students League president. “It is our hope that the surrounding communities will support our local artists through this auction by collecting modern forms of painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography.
“I have been charged with repairing the condemned lights of our student run gallery space,” he continued. “We hope to raise enough money to pay for the needed repairs.”
The auction will include art from current ASL members, faculty and faculty emeritus. Some of the artists donating work in the auction are Skip Baumhower, Al Sella, Sarah Marshall, Brian Evans, Brian Bishop, Craig Wedderspoon, Bill Dooley and Uta Krapf.
The Art Students League is a service organization for the art students at UA. Its purpose is to enrich the environment for all students by maintaining the student gallery space in Woods Hall and providing resources to help emerging artists develop their skills.
