Actress, UA Graduate Sela Ward Returns to Campus for Dec. 6 Book Signing

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Emmy Award-winning actress Sela Ward will return to her alma mater, The University of Alabama, on Friday, Dec. 6, to sign copies of her book “Homesick: A Memoir.”

The signing is scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. at the University Supply Store in UA’s Ferguson Center.

Ward, best known for her television roles as Lily Sammler on “Once and Again” and Teddy Reed on “Sisters,” is a 1977 graduate of UA’s College of Communication and Information Sciences. She earned a bachelor’s degree in communication, with a concentration in advertising.

Ward’s book, published by ReganBooks, chronicles the rediscovery of her Southern Roots after three decades spent away from her native region. Ward, who grew up in Meridian, Miss., calls “Homesick” the “story of a prodigal daughter who finally understood how much she loved her Southern home and needed it to make sense of her life in parts unknown.”

She observes that too many people, herself included, have moved away from the modest places that were too small to hold their dreams. Ward writes, “What I’m talking about is recreating, wherever we live now, the best parts of Home; either the home we had growing up or the home we wished for.” As part of her desire to provide such a place for others, Ward founded Hope Village for Children, a permanent refuge for abused and abandoned children.

Ward is a recipient of two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for her work on “Once and Again” and “Sisters” and a Cable Ace Award for her role as Jessica Savitch in “Almost Golden.” She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their two children.

NOTE: Prior to the Dec. 6 book signing, a brief news conference with Sela Ward will begin at 1 p.m. at the University Supply Store in The University of Alabama Ferguson Center.
