UA Law School to Hold Hugo Black Lecture Oct. 21

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama School of Law will host William H. Rodgers Jr. as this year’s presenter of the Hugo L. Black Lecture on Monday, Oct. 21.

Rodgers’ lecture, “Fighting Phantoms: Courage, Environmental Law and Free Speech,” will be held in the UA Moot Courtroom at 2 p.m. and is open to the public.

Rodgers serves as the Stimson-Bullitt Professor of Law at the University of Washington School of Law where he teaches environmental law, law and biology, public land law, resource management and property.

Specializing in natural resource law, he has published several works on environmental law including Handbook of Environmental Law and a casebook, Energy and Natural Resources Law.

Rodgers earned his B.A. from Harvard University and his LL.B. from Columbia University. He has also served as an attorney for various environmental resources and Indian law cases.

The University established the Hugo L. Black Lecture in 1996 to honor one of its most distinguished alumni, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black, a member of the UA law class of 1906. Memorabilia from Justice Black’s long and distinguished career are held in the special collections of the UA Law School’s Bounds Law Library.
