UA to Host Third Annual Family Weekend

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama faculty and staff will join forces to welcome family members of UA students to campus Sept. 27-29 for the third annual Family Weekend.

A special feature of this year’s Family Weekend is viewing a dance rehearsal by Cornelius Carter, UA professor of dance who was named National Professor of the Year for 2001-2002 by the Carnegie Foundation, from 6-7 p.m. in Morgan Auditorium on Friday, Sept. 27. Also on Friday, guests will tour the UA President’s Mansion and meet with Dr. Barry Mason, UA interim president, from 4-6 p.m. Additionally on Friday, guests are invited to attend the UA Women’s Soccer Team game against Rice University at 7 p.m.

On Saturday from 9-10:15 a.m. families can meet with divisional representatives in all undergraduate academic colleges. At 10:30 a.m. President Mason and the UA vice presidents and deans will speak to guests on the Quad. Families will be offered an opportunity to ask questions. During this time a drawing for a semester’s tuition and book scholarships will be held. From 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. lunch will be served on the Quad. The Afro-American Gospel Choir will provide music and entertainment. Other activities scheduled for Saturday include a showing of the Alabama vs. Arkansas football game, a Bryant-Denny Stadium tour and a Dinner Cruise.

On Sunday from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. families can attend brunch at Burke Commons Dining Hall. The cost of the brunch is $6.98 for anyone not on a Bama meal plan. At 2 p.m. the Bama Theater in downtown Tuscaloosa is showing the classic film, “Waiting for Guffman.” Tickets are $5.

Throughout the course of the weekend families can use the Student Recreation Center, Aquatic Center and University Recreation Golf Course for free with their Family Weekend nametag. Also, the Alabama Museum of Natural History, the Gorgas House and the Paul W. Bryant Museum will be open during the weekend.
