UA’s Sarah Moody Art Gallery Showcases New Art in Permanent Collection

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art on The University of Alabama campus will feature new acquisitions to the permanent collection in the exhibition Vue Deluxe: Selections from the Permanent Collection. The exhibition will run through Sept. 6.

The permanent collection features works on paper in the mediums of photography, printmaking, drawing, painting and digital art. The collection continues to grow due to generous donations and opportunity for acquisitions. These include recent works by Judy Pfaff, Dominique Blain, Roberto Huezo, Thornton Willis, William Kentridge and Samuel Mockbee. Familiar works such as those by William Walmsley, Carrie Mae Weems, Manuel Neri, Richmond Burton, Walker Evans and William Wegman also will be featured.

Of particular note is that recent works by international artist and University of Alabama alumnus William Christenberry will be featured at the exhibit.

Samuel Mockbee’s Tupac One Love; Mason’s Bend, AL, a small mixed media drawing, was selected for inclusion in the renowned Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York after purchase by the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art. Mockbee, a professor of architecture at Auburn University and founder of the Rural Studio in Newbern, visited the UA campus in September 2001. He died on Dec. 30, 2001.

The Farley Moody Galbraith II Purchase Fund provides funding for acquisitions to the permanent collection. The fund is named for donor Farley Moody Galbraith II, granddaughter of Sarah McCorkle Moody, who vigorously supported the arts during her lifetime. Gallery funding is provided by the department of art and the College of Arts and Sciences. Gallery hours are weekdays from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
