TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Campus patriotism is remembered this July Fourth through Operation Moral Support, a philanthropy event sponsored by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) University of Alabama chapter, in which UA students sent more than 580 cards of support to soldiers fighting overseas.

NSCS mailed 151 of these cards to the soldiers of the 314th PAD unit based in Homewood. Sometime later this month, the soldiers of 314th will be welcomed home with a celebration that Stacy Jones, UA assistant dean of students and NSCS chapter adviser, and Betsy Kervin, UA NSCS chapter president, are planning to attend.

Throughout the spring semester, NSCS members filled out cards of encouragement and appreciation to the men and women serving in the U.S. military in the Middle East. The student group plans to renew the drive this fall. During the semester, the NSCS created a display in the Ferguson Center to show the progress of Operation Moral Support. A toy soldier was placed in the display for every card collected during the project.

The UA project was supported by the Dollar Tree at McFarland Mall, University Supply Store, Buffalo Rock Bottling Co., Crimson White, Ferguson Center facilities staff, UA chapter of the National Panhellenic Council and the Tuscaloosa chapter of the American Red Cross.
