TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama will honor seven people for contributions made to the field of geological science and its education programs during a 4 p.m. ceremony on Friday, Nov. 2 in room 101 of the Tom Bevill Energy, Mineral and Materials Science Research Building on the UA campus.
Individuals to be honored on the Founders Wall of Distinction for providing clear vision and exemplary leadership in the origination and development of the teaching, research, and service programs of UA’s geological sciences department are:
Dr. W. Gary Hooks for outstanding leadership in the education of geoscientists, and for creative and dedicated undergraduate teaching in the geological sciences,
Dr. Douglas E. Jones for outstanding leadership in the design and development of geoscience education programs, and for commitment to excellence in Coastal Plain geoscience research,
Dr. Philip E. LaMoreaux for outstanding leadership in hydrogeology and environmental geoscience education, and for international recognition of achievements in innovative environmental geoscience research,
Dr. Eugene A. Smith for outstanding leadership in the education of field-oriented geoscientists, and for numerous and diverse research contributions in advancing understanding of the geology and natural resources of Alabama, and
Dr. Michael Tuomey for outstanding leadership as a pioneer in geological education and for significant research contributions on the geology of Alabama.
Individuals to be recognized on the Donors Wall of Distinction for outstanding contributions for the advancement of the education programs of the Department are:
Mr. Ray Loper for outstanding contributions to the advancement of education in environmental geoscience; he established the Ray E. Loper Endowed Chair in Environmental Geology at UA in 1988, and
Mr. George Lindahl, III for outstanding contributions to the advancement of education in the geosciences; he provided funds for classroom renovation, student scholarships, and support for field geology classes and field trips.
