TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama will observe National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week 2001, Oct. 21-25.
The Health Education and Wellness department, located in the UA Russell Student Health Center, is partnering with the UA Counseling Center, intercollegiate athletics, University Recreation, the Panhellenic Association and Inter-Fraternity Council, Student Media, Judicial Affairs and the UA Women’s Resource Center to organize activities for UA students.
The tentative schedule of events includes:
Tuesday, Oct. 23 – Information table, Ferguson Center, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
An “Alcohol 101” CD-ROM program will be available to students, as well as a chance to participate in “DWEyes,” an activity that demonstrates loss of motor skills due to intoxication. The information table will also promote activities planned for Wednesday.
Wednesday, Oct. 24 – Outdoor event, Ferguson Plaza, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Activities located in the Plaza during the outdoor event will include a rock-climbing wall for students, “DWEyes” activity will be available. Printed information from Health Education and the Counseling Center, the Women’s Resource Center, and University Recreation will also be available. Also on Wednesday, guest speaker Mike Green will talk at 8 p.m. in Morgan Auditorium.
In addition to these activities, coordinators of the week’s events will be promoting the Student Writing Competition on Alcohol Abuse Issues, sponsored by the Inter-Association Task Force on Alcohol & Other Substance Abuse Issues. Fliers will be available in the Ferguson Center announcing the writing contest. First prize is $2,000 and four second-place prizes of $1,000 each will be awarded.
