TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama has established a 24-hour “Hazing Hotline” to allow students, parents or others to report incidents of hazing confidentially and, if desired, anonymously.
The hotline has been set up to help prevent accidents or injuries from taking place, said Todd Borst, assistant dean of students at UA. “While hazing is not a common problem at UA, we want to provide students with a quick, confidential way to report any incidents that do occur,” he said.
The hotline number is 205/348-HALT (4258). Those calling the hotline will be able to leave a confidential message with the Dean of Students’ office. While calls can be anonymous, callers are asked to include as much detailed information as possible.
UA policy defines hazing as “any act which inflicts extreme physical, emotional, or psychological pressure or injury on an individual or which purposely demeans, degrades, or disgraces an individual.” Hazing can occur in any academic, social, service, military or athletic organization.
In the state of Alabama, individuals committing acts of hazing can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor and can be subject to both criminal and civil prosecution. An individual or organization participating in a hazing or knowingly permitting hazing forfeits entitlement to public funds, scholarships, awards and grants.
