UA Earns National Environmental Safety Award

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A division of the National Safety Council honored The University of Alabama with an Award of Merit for its environmental safety program.

The recognition is for UA’s entry in the Complete Environmental, Health and Safety Program and is awarded by The Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Division of the National Safety Council.

Hal Barrett, director of UA’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety, will accept the award’s plaque July 10 during the International Conference on Campus Safety’s awards luncheon at the Memorial Student Center in College Station, Texas.

“This award proves that UA has an excellent safety program,” Barrett said.

After six months of preparation, the application was submitted in February. During the application process, the department answered and provided documentation to more than 100 questions relating to its safety programs.

Barrett said he uses the questionnaire as a self-audit to improve the University’s safety programs. The EHS department handles all environmental safety concerns – not security issues.

“We look at how our program compares to industry standards,” Barrett said.

The recognition program encourages applicants to strive for excellence in designing and implementing their safety programs and to incorporate novel or original ideas while complying with standardized regulations.

This is the third time UA has received this honor.
