U.S. Secretary of Education to Address Grads at Summer Commencement Aug. 11

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige will be the featured speaker at The University of Alabama’s summer commencement exercises Saturday, Aug. 11, at Coleman Coliseum on the UA campus.

Approximately 1,100 degrees will be conferred during the 9 a.m. ceremony.

A native of Mississippi, Paige has spent the majority of his professional career in the Houston area, where he served as superintendent of the Houston Independent School District before being named to his current position. He also served for a decade as dean of the College of Education at Texas Southern University.

Paige has served on review committees of the Texas Education Agency and the State Board of Education’s Task Force on High School Education, and he has chaired the Youth Employment Issues Subcommittee of the National Commission for Employment Policy of the U.S. Department of Labor.

His honors and awards include, 1999 Outstanding Urban Educator, 2000 National Association of Black School Educators’ Superintendent of the Year, and 2001 National Superintendent of the Year. Paige holds a bachelor’s degree from Jackson State (Mississippi) University and a master’s degree and a doctorate from Indiana University.
