UA Cited as One of Nation’s ‘Best Colleges for the Real World’

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama has been cited as one of the nation’s “best colleges for the real world” in a new collegiate guide aimed at rating colleges on their ability to help students “get in, get out and get a job.”

The guide, titled “The Best 201 Colleges for the Real World,” rates colleges and universities on their ability to serve the needs of today’s consumer-oriented students and their parents. It focuses on areas including educational cost, variety of programs, quality of life on campus, and career development. It is published by Octameron Associates and authored by Michael Viollt, president of Robert Morris College in Chicago.

“We are honored to add this recognition to the list of guides that rank The University of Alabama among the best choices for students. Preparing students for successful careers, and doing so at reasonable cost, are among the most important of our goals, so this listing is particularly gratifying,” said UA President Andrew Sorensen.

Evaluation for inclusion in the guide included five areas: opportunity for the general student body to get into and pay for college, success of previous classes in graduating in a timely fashion, commitment to develop career opportunities, the overall college experience and recent market response to the college or university. Specific criteria ranged from share of majors in applied fields to job placement services to tuition costs and freshmen retention rate.

In addition to the new guide, UA has been listed in numerous national publications citing its quality and value, including U.S. News and World Report, the Princeton Review’s “Guide to the Best 331 Colleges” and Barron’s “300 Best Buys in College Education.”
