UA Students Receive Gold Circle Awards At College Media Convention

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama student-run newspaper, The Crimson White (CW), and the Corolla yearbook won 11 Gold Circle Awards at the Spring College Media Convention, held recently in New York City.

The convention was sponsored by the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association and College Media Advisers Inc.

CW chief photographer Dan Murphy of Tuscaloosa won first place for the best color sports page design for “Gameday,” second place best single feature photograph for “League Labeled Hate Group,” and honorable mention best single color spot news photograph for “UA Professor Dies In Crash.”

CW sports editor Nick Parsons of Bessemer won third place best sports news story for “Bama Stomps the Swamp.” CW associate sports editor Evan Woodbery of Germantown, Tenn., won third place in general or humor column for “Wrongful Arrest Ruins Spring Break” and honorable mention best personality profile for “Student Leaves Bible Study Behind.”

Corolla yearbook editor Joanne McCrary of Tuscaloosa won third place for best cover design and honorable mention for best student life spread, “Issues and Experiences.” Writer John Taylor of Huntsville won honorable mention best personality profile for “Making the Most.”

The Corolla yearbook staff also won honorable mention best headline writing for “SEC Ya Later,” “Bad Booty Call” and “How the West was Won.”
