UA Student Media Leaders Named For 2001-2002

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Media Planning Board has named 12 new student leaders to positions within the UA Office of Student Media for the 2001-2002 academic year.

The Media Planning Board is an oversight body for the Office of Student Media, which produces The Crimson White (CW) newspaper, the Corolla yearbook, WVUA-FM student radio station, Black Warrior Review, Marr’s Field Journal, and Southern Historian.

Luke Connell of Cullman was named CW editor and Marcy Maholovich of Century, Fla., named CW retail sales manager. Connell is a junior majoring in journalism; he has served as CW metro/state editor for the past year. Maholovich is a senior hospitality management major who has worked for the CW as an account executive since 1999. The CW is the daily student-produced newspaper of the University and has been published since 1894.

Reagan Rhone of Tuscaloosa has been named station manager and Vona Sue Robbins of Arab re-appointed patronship director of WVUA-FM. Rhone is a junior majoring in telecommunication and film. He has served as program director of WVUA for the past year. Robbins is a sophomore majoring in public relations; she has served as patronship director of WVUA since December.

Donnie Smith of Homewood has been named editor and Alyssa Noles of Montgomery business manager of the Corolla yearbook. Smith is a senior majoring in journalism. He has served as design director and sports editor for the Corolla for the past year. Noles is a sophomore majoring in English. She has served as Greek life editor for the Corolla for the past year.

Matt Supko of Huntsville was re-appointed editor and Erika Cotton of Huntsville was named managing editor of Marr’s Field Journal. Supko is a senior English major and Cotton is a sophomore journalism major. Marr’s Field Journal, which takes its name from the early 19th century name of what is now the UA campus, publishes the literary and artistic works of UA undergraduates. It is produced by UA undergraduates and has been published since 1991.

Ander Monson was named editor and David Goldberg managing editor of the Black Warrior Review. Monson is a candidate in the master of fine arts program in the English department; he has a B.A. from Knox College and an M.A. from Iowa State University. He has served as design editor and assistant fiction editor for the Black Warrior Review for the past year. Goldberg is a master of fine arts candidate in the English department. He has a B.A. from George Washington University and an M.A. from Miami University. He has served as research assistant for the Black Warrior Review since the fall of 2000.

Mark Smith was named editor and Robert Hart business manager of Southern Historian. Both are doctoral candidates in the history department. Smith has a B.A. from Kennesaw State University and an M.A. from the State University of West Georgia. Hart has a B.A. from Furman University and an M.A. from Clemson University. Southern Historian is a nationally distributed scholarly journal of Southern history produced by Ph.D. candidates in the history department; it has been published annually since 1980.
