UA Wins Seven Awards In Annual Competition

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Office of University Relations at The University of Alabama won seven awards for media relations work, publications and television spots in the annual awards competition sponsored by District III of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). CASE is a national association of college and university public relations, advancement and alumni affairs professionals. District III encompasses nine Southeastern states. The awards were presented recently at CASE District III’s conference in Atlanta.

“It is most rewarding for our staff to know that their work is considered superior among peer institutions in the Southeast,” said Janet Griffith, assistant vice president for University Relations. “This is an excellent benchmark as we continue to develop a strategic integrated marketing plan for our campus.”

The UA Office of Media Relations received a Grand Award, CASE’s highest honor, in the category of feature story or series for Educated Guesses 2000, an annual project in which faculty experts predict future trends. The Office also received an Award of Excellence, the second highest award, for overall media relations programs for a project titled “Promoting Faculty” that showcased the media relations staff’s efforts to promote faculty in the local, regional and national media. The awards recognized staff members Cathy Andreen, Chris Bryant, Suzanne Dowling, Bill Gerdes, Lance Skelly, Janice Fink, Linda Hill, Angie Balius and Bill McDaniel.

UA’s faculty/staff newsletter, Dialog, received an Award of Excellence in the tabloid publishing improvement category. The award recognized a redesign of Dialog that was implemented last summer. Award winners were Joanna Hutt, Dialog editor; Susy Daria, graphic designer; and photographers Alice Wilson and Rickey Yanaura.

UA’s Office of Marketing Communication won an Award of Special Merit for a series of publications designed for the College of Engineering. The award recognized staff members Laura Lineberry, David Jones, Susy Daria, Chip Cooper, Alice Wilson, Rickey Yanaura, Janice Fink and Tracy Sims.

UA’s Office of Broadcast Services garnered three awards. Tom Stipe, director of broadcast services, won an Award of Excellence for a television spot titled “Crimson Pride.” Bill McDaniel and Angie Balius won an Award of Special Merit for a video news release title “UA’s Rural Health Fair. . .Making a Difference.” Stipe and Balius also received an Award of Special Merit for a feature video about UA’s Denny Society.
