TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Alabama Scholastic Press Association will host its annual state convention March 9-10 at The University of Alabama.
The convention fee is $40 for ASPA members and $50 for non-members. Registration begins at 9 a.m. on March 9 at the Ferguson Center Theatre entrance at UA.
The workshop fee includes a pizza and karaoke party Friday night and a continental breakfast Saturday.
High school journalism students and teachers from across the state are invited to take part in newspaper, literary magazine, yearbook, broadcast, photography and desktop publishing sessions and competitions. The Alabama high school journalist, adviser and administrator of the year will be announced, as well as results of ASPA’s annual critiques.
Robert Greenman, education consultant for “The New York Times,” will be the keynote speaker. He will teach newspaper sessions and autograph copies of his recent book, “Words That Make a Difference.” Greenman will join four other nationally recognized journalism educators as featured speakers. Local faculty and media professionals will also teach individual sessions.
Mark Murray of Arlington, Texas, will teach magazine, photography and advising sessions. This frequent workshop presenter is a former literary magazine adviser and photography teacher. John Cutsinger of Apopka, Fla., will teach yearbook and magazine sessions. He is national key accounts manage for Jostens and travels the country teaching yearbook journalism trends. David Knight of Lancaster, S.C., will teach broadcast and newspaper sessions. A broadcast teacher and former newspaper adviser, Knight inspires young writers with techniques he’s honed in workshops from Texas to Nebraska. Finally, Grady Locklear of Sumter, S.C., will teach magazine sessions and direct a fiction and poetry workshop. Locklear advised a literary arts magazine for 25 years.
