TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The University of Alabama’s “Building Community Initiative” has been named the 2000 recipient of the Golden Award, the top award given by the National Association of College Auxiliary Services for cultural diversity programming.
An awards ceremony will be held Thursday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Presidential Board Room, 203 Rose Administration Building on the UA campus. UA President Andrew Sorensen will accept on UA’s behalf.
The Golden Award recognizes outstanding campus leadership, activities and/or programs promoting cultural awareness and equality. It is given to a current member, institution or company, in good standing, that has displayed exemplary and outstanding service to cultural diversity in the profession of college and auxiliary management and has promoted cultural awareness and equality in an on-going fashion.
The Building Community Initiative, a grass roots effort to improve human relationships and diversity on campus, is the direct result of two goals Sorensen set in 1997 to “enhance the diversity of our University community and cultivate a sense of community.”
